What is incense?

In Middle High and Old High German, it was still called wihrou[c]h and meant "holy incense". And indeed, incense is known to most people from the church. The precious resin was among the gifts of the Magi - along with gold and myrrh - and has been used for ritual incense in Christian religions since the 4th century. In ancient Egypt, incense was used in ritual acts, such as the mummification of respected people. The ancient Greeks used it to communicate with the gods. The "divine" or "sacred" aspect of incense - the heart drops were also known as the "sweat of the gods" - can be traced back to the use of the resin: our ancestors used it to cure illnesses, which in ancient times was closely associated with sacredness. In the Orient and India, on the other hand, incense played a therapeutic role rather than a religious one.
 

Indian, African or Arabic incense

Frankincense comes from the balsam tree family (Burseraceae), which has unusual climatic requirements and needs the desert climate. Heat and drought do not affect them, but they die in wet and cold conditions. The low, squat trees with bark that peels off like paper grow in Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen, Sudan and Oman, as well as in India and Pakistan, mostly singly and in terrain that is difficult to access. They grow to be hundreds of years old, but the coveted resin they donate only after many years.
 

Boswellia plant

In the subgenus Boswellia there are 25 species of different incense tree plants, of which mainly five are economically relevant: Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carterii, Boswellia dalzielii, Boswellia papyrifera, Boswellia serrata.
 

Olibanum: The incense resin

depending on the origin and location, the incense has different properties. To harvest "olibanum" (also "gum olibanum"), the branches are carefully scratched and the viscous resin flows out slowly, coagulating in the air to form shapeless lumps of resin. If harvested responsibly and with proper technique, the tree can be stressed for centuries without damage, yielding about a kilogram of resin each time it is harvested. The color of the resin beads varies from whitish and silvery to yellowish and greenish to reddish.

What is incense made of?

Not least because of its long tradition, frankincense resin is quite well researched, even though it consists of a variety of chemical compounds. The known frankincense ingredients are:
 

- Essential oils, - AKBA acid (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid).

- KBA acid (11-keto-β-boswellic acid)

- Incensol

- incensole acetate, - mucic acids

- Rubber

Available is the resin itself, as well as frankincense capsules, creams, frankincense ointment, balsam gel as well as frankincense powder. In our store we offer frankincense extract in high doses in capsule form - this facilitates the intake and increases the acceptance. Our valuable frankincense resin comes from sustainable wild collection of trees of the species Boswellia Serrata, which contain the highest proportion of boswellic acids. The frankincense extract is subjected to regular purity controls to exclude pesticides and heavy metals, and then filled into vegan cellulose capsules.

 

Consumption recommendation

Consume 1 capsule (450mg) daily with water.
