What makes food-grade peat so special? 

About 12,000 years ago, the melting of the ice glaciers created an extraordinary habitat for many rare, highly specialized plants and animals in the form of natural bogs.

This long period is still reflected in the composition of the bogs today: up to 350 plant species, many of which no longer exist, are still contained in the bog and form a nutrient-rich peat layer. Year after year, this peat layer in the natural bogs grows by only 1 millimeter. That is why peat is so precious. 

This is also the most important component of the mire: the humic acids. This is because they inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi in the bog.

Humic acids are formed during the decomposition of plants or animals in the bog. This is called humification. Humic substances including humic acids are formed. Humic acids have several important functions in the environment. Not all bogs are the same: how to tell good bog from bad

The test is very simple: Stir your test bog into a glass of water. Once you have only bog soil, it will settle to the bottom of the glass after a few hours and the water will become clearer.

You can recognize high quality medicinal peat by the fact that even after 24 hours hardly any change can be seen. The reason is the fats, oils and waxes contained in the humified herbs.
