Green-lipped mussels are a type of mussel native to the waters of New Zealand. There they have been used as food by the Maori aborigines for thousands of years. Every year, the female green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) lays up to 30 million eggs during her spawning season in June or July. Fertilized eggs give rise to swimming larvae that feed on plankton. During rearing, 3-4 week old larvae are settled in the sea on special ropes that can be up to 100 meters long. There they grow for another 4-5 weeks before maturing in natural marine environments, swimming freely.
