Chlorine dioxide consists of chlorine and oxygen and is known to chemists with the molecular formula ClO2. Although it contains "chlorine" in its name, it behaves differently from the gaseous compound. Chlorine dioxide is formed when sodium chlorite is mixed with a highly diluted acid - and these are also the two components of our new set:

• Component B: 4 % hydrochloric acid

What is CDL and what is it used for?

Chlorine dioxide has been part of the German Drinking Water Ordinance since 2011 and conforms to DIN EN 12671 as a product "for the treatment of water intended for human consumption". Among other things, it is used to improve the taste and odor of drinking water when it is contaminated by rotten algae or plant residues.

Unlike chlorine, it is also effective against viruses and many protozoa in drinking water. In addition, chlorine dioxide forms less chlorinated hydrocarbons from organic material, so-called organochlorine compounds, such as chloroform, dichloroacetic acid or trichloroacetic acid.

As a weaker oxidant, chlorine dioxide is also the gentler agent of choice compared to the ozone used as an alternative. This is because CDL forms fewer harmful bromates than ozone when it reacts with water.
