Astaxanthin from Iceland
Admittedly, the word astaxanthin is quite a tongue twister and not really easy to remember. But this is not the only reason why astaxanthin has it all in the truest sense of the word. The natural dietary supplement is not an invention of modern times, but a secondary plant substance that has been found in plants and animals for thousands of years. Perhaps you are wondering what this has to do with you? Well, strictly speaking, we humans are mammals, aren't we?
Curious? Then embark on an exciting journey.

What is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin belongs to the so-called carotenoids. This is the name given to the pigments to which plants owe their color. They ensure that pears are yellow, apples red and carrots orange. Our astaxanthin is extracted for you from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. You may be wondering now, because after all, algae are known to be green. You are absolutely right. The tiny algae is actually green in nature - with one exception. Whenever Haematococcus pluvialis is under stress, it uses a certain substance for its own protection: astaxanthin. Above all, the alga perceives strong sunlight as pure stress and, with the help of the carotenoid, turns red without further ado. This means that UV radiation can no longer harm it. Food shortages or extreme cold also trigger stress in the alga and lead to the increased formation of astaxanthin, while at the same time it stops its entire metabolism. With the help of this carotenoid, the microalga can even survive for many weeks completely without food. It almost seems as if it effectively protects itself from all environmental influences. Since all the water around the microalga has a reddish glow, it is also called "blood rain alga".
Incidentally, astaxanthin plays a crucial role not only in the plant kingdom. The carotenoid gets into shrimp, salmon and co. via food and gives them their typical color. Since astaxanthin already serves the blood rain algae well and nothing is left to chance in nature, many researchers assume that mammals also benefit from the carotenoid. After all, it is one of the secondary plant substances.
Astaxanthin and other antioxidants- profess color!
What does the blood rain algae have to do with you? Well, stress is certainly no stranger to you - even if you are most likely not affected by food shortages, all cells in your body know the phenomenon enough in the form of oxidative stress. This is an imbalance between free radicals and the so-called radical scavengers (such as antioxidants). Free radicals are naturally produced by the body's own metabolic processes in the cells. But environmental factors can also lead to the increased formation of free radicals. Free radicals are certain oxygen compounds that lack an electron. Since they want to have this electron with all their might, they steal it without further ado from another molecule in your body. This creates a vicious circle, because the stolen molecule itself becomes a free radical and steals the next molecule. To counteract this process in your cells and to stop the constant formation of free radicals, your body or your cells need antioxidants. Antioxidants simply catch the free radicals and make them harmless, so that they can no longer harm your body. Astaxanthin belongs to the group of antioxidants and has an impressive ORAC value. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity and indicates to what extent the antioxidants can intercept oxygen radicals. For comparison: Vitamin A has an ORAC value of 1.25. The carotenoid beta-carotene (the colorant in carrots and the like) has a value of 5. Astaxanthin, on the other hand, has an ORAC value of 51. The rest is self-explanatory, isn't it?
